on 
Scholarly Writing Skills to Maximise Research Impact and Visibility


Report:
The Library, DDGD Vaishnav College, conducted a guest lecture titled ‘Scholarly Writing Skills to Maximise Research Impact and Visibility’ on 20.10.2022 at 10.30 am in the School of Management block. The guest lecture was attended by 60 participants comprising of students from the PG department of the School of Management and research scholars from various other departments. Dr.H.Fazlunnisa, Assistant Professor, Department of Library and Information Science, University of Madras, Chennai was the resource person. The session commenced with the presidential address delivered by Dr. S. Santhosh Baboo, Principal, DDGD Vaishnav College. Dr.T.S.Prema, Associate Professor and Head, P.G and Research Department of Economics, delivered the keynote address of the session, followed by a thematic address by Dr.U.Amaleshwari, Director, School of Management. The programme was organized to furnish the research scholars with the techniques of research writing and publishing. Dr.H.Fazlunnisa briefed the students and scholars on the various steps in literature search that would aid them in identifying appropriate research methodologies and design of study. She later briefed on the various approaches to be followed by a scholar to write a literature review. She pointed out the necessary criteria that one has to follow, to plan, organize and distil the ideas into a review.

Dr.H.Fazlunnisa, reiterated on the essential skills that one has to possess to write a research paper or thesis that included choosing the appropriate topic finding relevant primary and secondary sources, organizing the information etc. She touched upon the factors involved in publishing a research paper in Scopus / UGC CARE / Web of Science and Peer reviewed Journals, which she believed to be the need of the hour in the field of academia. She discussed the necessity to produce original research, and the various softwares that aids one in avoiding plagiarism. Dr.H.Fazlunnisa, laid out the practical approaches to writing a scholarly research paper, by providing various samples. She also made the scholars aware of the perils of publishing in predatory journals, and the availability of authentic journals. The students came up with creative solutions to the open-ended questions deliberated during the session. The guest lecture concluded with a prize distribution, and a feedback session. The vote of thanks was rendered by Dr.M.Mani, Librarian, Dwaraka Doss Goverdhan Doss Vaishnav College.

Outcome:

The students were highly benefitted by the programme, as it enriched them with the necessary skills and competency required to write a research paper/thesis. The session proved to be insightful as it enlightened the students on the ability to choose and publish in the right high impact journals. The students were able to understand the techniques to overcome plagiarism and understand the difference between peer - reviewed and predatory journals. The session created an awareness on the authentic and authoritative information sources in the field of research among scholars and students who were passionate about research.

    The Habit of Reading Books Inclines or Declines Among the Students


Objective:

The habit of reading has decreased among students in the society. Therefore, with the lofty aim of encouraging reading habit among students and to enable constant reading, a debate competition is organized by the Library and NDLI Club on the topic, The Habit of Reading Books Inclines or Declines among the Students.

Report:

A Debate competition on "The Habit of Reading Books Inclines or Declines Among the Students" was organized on 19th October, 2022 by the Library and National Digital Library of India (NDLI Club). The welcome address was delivered by Dr. Sadanandham, event coordinator. Dr.C.Chellapillai, Head, Department of Tamil judged and delivered an excellent speech. A. Sujithraj of III B.Sc Chemistry and M. Eswaran of I B.A Tamil participated representing the team ‘Reading habit is increasing among students’ and recorded profound comments by pointing out that nowadays students are not only reading books but are also developing their knowledge by reading e-books online. They also recorded their profound opinion that, only through constant reading students can move towards the path of improvement. Similarly, K. Ponroja of III B.Sc Botany and K. Manimozhi of I B.A Tamil represented the team ‘Reading habit is receding among students’ and debated in a detailed manner the extent to which the habit of reading has declined and also discussed on the consequences caused by the over usage of social media.

Dr.M.Mani,Librarian compered and organized the event. The judgment was given after listening to the arguments of both the teams. The Vote of thanks was given by Mr.I.Noorul Hasan, Member of NDLI Club.
